Uttar Pradesh to Establish ‘Vande Mataram Vatikas’ Across All 75 Districts
Lucknow, August 16, 2026: The Uttar Pradesh government established “Vande Mataram Vatikas” across all 75 districts on Independence Day as part of an initiative combining patriotism with environmental conservation.
The programme was linked to the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram and implemented under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign.
150 Saplings in Every District
According to the state government, 150 saplings were planted in each district at designated locations.
The initiative is intended to create green spaces that also serve as a tribute to the national song and its 150-year legacy.
Public Participation Planned
The Vatikas are being developed through public participation, with the Forest Department coordinating the plantation programme.
Officials said locally suitable species—including shady, fruit-bearing and ecologically beneficial plants—would be selected for the sites.
Long-Term Green Heritage
The Forest Department plans to assign responsibility for maintaining the saplings locally so that the initiative develops into a lasting green legacy rather than remaining a one-day plantation programme.
Lucknow Vatika to Be Expanded
A Vande Mataram Vatika already exists at Kukrail Picnic Spot in Lucknow and is being expanded as part of the Independence Day initiative.
An Ashoka Chakra has been constructed at the location. According to the statement, Ashoka saplings will be planted around the outer sections of its 24 spokes.
Patriotism and Environment
The initiative combines two themes—national pride and environmental protection—by using the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram as an occasion for creating long-term green spaces throughout the state.
