Delhi LG Urges Citizens to Help Build a ‘Viksit Dilli’ by 2047
Taranjit Singh Sandhu calls for civic responsibility, better coordination and focused action on pollution, Yamuna cleaning, safety and infrastructure.
NEW DELHI, AUGUST 16, 2026: Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has urged citizens to play an active role in India's journey towards “Viksit Bharat” by 2047, calling for the creation of a model “Viksit Dilli” built around civic pride, safety and excellence.
Sandhu made the remarks while hoisting the national flag at Lok Niwas on Independence Day, where he paid tribute to freedom fighters and those involved in nation-building.
WHAT HAPPENED
The Delhi LG referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of “Shakti Ki Saptadhara”, which covers seven broad areas of national development:
Manufacturing
Agriculture and food processing
Technology and innovation
Gati Shakti
Raksha Shakti
Green and blue economy
India's soft power
Sandhu said these priorities were equally relevant to Delhi and stressed the need for closer coordination between the Central government, Delhi government, civic bodies, neighbouring states and citizens.
KEY PRIORITIES FOR DELHI
The LG identified several areas requiring focused attention:
Cleaning and rejuvenating the Yamuna
Tackling air pollution
Improving housing
Expanding affordable healthcare
Strengthening women's and children's safety
Improving traffic management
Preserving Delhi's heritage
He said Delhi's development should translate into greater convenience, dignity and well-being for its residents.
LG'S MESSAGE TO YOUTH
Sandhu particularly called on young people to take greater ownership of public spaces and participate in the city's development.
He stressed that government agencies alone cannot ensure that public spaces remain clean and well maintained, emphasising the need for collective civic responsibility.
DELHI'S FUTURE
Referring to his long association with Delhi, Sandhu described the capital as his “karmbhoomi” and said its potential should be converted into tangible improvements in citizens' everyday lives.
He called for Delhi to emerge as a premier global capital that balances its historical heritage with modern development.
WHAT'S NEXT
The LG's priorities place greater emphasis on coordinated action across government agencies and civic institutions, alongside increased participation from residents, particularly young people, in maintaining and developing the capital.
