Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Urges PM Modi to Retain 543 Lok Sabha Seats and 33% Women’s Quota

CHENNAI, August 16, 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring constitutional amendments to ensure that the Lok Sabha continues to have 543 members and that the existing distribution of seats among states remains unchanged after the next delimitation exercise.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Vijay referred to a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly opposing any change to the state's representation following delimitation based on population figures.
TAMIL NADU'S DELIMITATION CONCERNS
The Tamil Nadu Assembly has expressed concern that using population data from a later Census for delimitation could reduce the state's representation in the Lok Sabha.
The resolution argues that such a move could disadvantage southern states that have made progress in areas including healthcare, education, economic development and population stabilisation, according to the source material.
Vijay enclosed the Assembly resolution with his letter and requested the Centre to consider it while framing the constitutional changes required for the next delimitation.
CALL TO RETAIN 543 SEATS
The Chief Minister has specifically sought a constitutional provision ensuring that the Lok Sabha remains a 543-member House and that the current distribution of seats among states is retained.
The request comes amid concerns in Tamil Nadu over the possible impact of future delimitation on the state's parliamentary representation.
Vijay also referred to Tamil Nadu's Lok Sabha representation having declined from 41 seats to 39 seats in 1967, citing it as part of the state's historical experience with changes in parliamentary representation.
33% RESERVATION FOR WOMEN
Vijay also drew Prime Minister Modi's attention to the 33% reservation for women in the upcoming Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
He urged that the reservation issue be taken into consideration alongside the wider constitutional and electoral changes under discussion.
WHY THE ISSUE MATTERS
Delimitation determines the number and distribution of parliamentary constituencies. Tamil Nadu's concern, as presented in the Assembly resolution cited by Vijay, is that states that successfully implemented population-control measures could face reduced political representation under a population-based redistribution.
