Expired Meat Seized From Mysuru Hotels as Karnataka Intensifies Food Safety Inspections

MYSURU/MANGALURU, August 16, 2026: Karnataka authorities have intensified food safety inspections across the state, with officials reporting the seizure of expired meat and other perishable food products from hotels and food establishments in Mysuru.

The latest enforcement action also included a surprise inspection of a KFC outlet in Mangaluru following a complaint from a customer about allegedly stale food.

9 KG EXPIRED CHICKEN SEIZED

During inspections in Mysuru, food safety officials reportedly seized 9 kg of chicken from the Rio Meridian Hotel after finding that it had crossed its stated expiry date.

Officials also inspected four other hotels. At the Grand Mercure Hotel, around 68 kg of meat was seized, while 4 kg of mushrooms were reportedly removed from the Q Star Hotel.

Three resorts each in Mysuru and Nanjangud taluks were also inspected.

FOOD SAMPLES SENT FOR TESTING

Officials collected five food samples during the inspection operation.

Of these, two were legal samples and three were survey samples, according to the source report.

Authorities also disposed of approximately 16 kg of expired food and ready-to-eat items during the inspections.

Three notices were reportedly issued to establishments during the operation.

KFC OUTLET INSPECTED IN MANGALURU

Food safety officials conducted a surprise inspection at a KFC outlet in City Centre on K.S. Rao Road, Mangaluru, following a consumer complaint.

The customer had allegedly complained that a Peri Peri Leg ordered online was stale and unsuitable for consumption.

Officials inspected the outlet's:

Kitchen

Storage areas

Cold rooms

Cooked-food stocks

Freezers

The inspection was part of the broader state campaign to check compliance with food safety and hygiene requirements.

STATEWIDE CRACKDOWN

Karnataka's Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has been conducting inspections in major cities including Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru.

The department has reportedly found violations such as expired food products, spoiled vegetables, fungal contamination and improper meat storage at some establishments, including several three-star and five-star hotels.

Officials said more than 1,000 kg of unsafe food products have been seized during food safety operations conducted across the state over the past several years.

GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS AND OTHER FOOD FACILITIES ALSO CHECKED

Food establishments operating inside government buildings in Bengaluru, including Vidhana Soudha, Vikasa Soudha and Arogya Soudha, have also come under inspection.

Authorities have reportedly identified issues involving sanitation, pest control and the use of outdated ingredients at some facilities.

The department has also surveyed quick-commerce storage centres, community food facilities and some Indira Canteens. Some establishments have reportedly received notices or faced closure where sanitation requirements were not met.

The enforcement drive is being conducted under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with applicable licensing and safety regulations.

BENGALURU INSPECTIONS

The source report said food safety teams in Bengaluru Urban district recently inspected 60 three-star and five-star hotels and collected 77 food samples for laboratory testing.

The latest inspections indicate that the state intends to continue monitoring hotels, restaurants, government cafeterias and other establishments involved in food preparation and handling.
